Terms of Service
1. What this site is
Mental OS Overwrite ("the site," "we," "our") is a personal-development tool for identifying and overwriting unhelpful mental loops. By creating a profile or submitting content, you agree to the terms below. If you do not agree, do not use the site.
2. Profiles and data we store
When you create a profile, we store your username, the password hash you choose, an optional email address, an optional display name and bio, and the dates you signed up and accepted these terms.
As you use the site we also store: the overwrites you run, the sprints you complete, the typed tasks you create, the diary entries you write, your favorites, your friend connections, your votes on lens submissions, and aggregate counters (focus points, streaks, etc.). Tasks and diary entries are private to you. Stat counters and your username appear on the public leaderboard unless you mark your profile non-public in Profile settings.
3. Email
Email is optional. If you provide one we may use it to contact you about the service. By creating an account you understand that your username, profile information, and email address (if provided) may be sold or transferred to third parties at the operator's discretion, including in the context of a sale of the site. If you do not want this, do not provide an email — the rest of the site works without one.
4. User-submitted content (UGC)
The site allows users to submit content — including programs, lens proposals, tasks, diary entries, profile bios, and votes ("submissions"). The following rules apply to all submissions:
- You retain ownership of your submissions. By submitting, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable license to host, display, reformat, and distribute your submissions on or in connection with the site, including promotional uses.
- You are solely responsible for what you submit. We do not pre-review every submission. We are a passive host operating under safe-harbor provisions of applicable law (including 17 U.S.C. § 512 in the United States). We are not the speaker, author, or publisher of UGC.
- You will not submit: sexual content involving minors; non-consensual intimate imagery; targeted harassment of identifiable individuals; threats; instructions for self-harm or for harming others; doxxing; content that infringes third-party copyright, trademark, or right of publicity; spam; malware; or anything illegal where you reside or where the site is operated.
- We may remove anything at any time for any reason or no reason, with or without notice. Repeat violators may have their accounts terminated.
- DMCA / takedown: if you believe content on the site infringes your copyright, send a written takedown notice to the contact listed in the site footer with: a description of the infringed work, the URL of the infringing material, your contact info, and a good-faith statement that the use is not authorized.
5. References to movies, games, books, and other works
Some lenses and programs reference titles, characters, settings, or mechanics from movies, video games, TV shows, books, and other copyrighted works ("Reference Works"). These references are provided for the purpose of commentary, transformative metaphor, and personal-development education. We believe such use is protected under fair-use principles in U.S. copyright law (17 U.S.C. § 107) and analogous doctrines in other jurisdictions, because:
- The use is transformative — Reference Works are repurposed as psychological-pattern metaphors, not as substitutes for the original works.
- No substantial portion of any Reference Work is reproduced. We use only titles and short structural references (typically a few words).
- The use does not compete with or substitute for the market for the Reference Works.
All trademarks, service marks, characters, and copyrighted works remain the property of their respective owners. We do not claim any affiliation with, endorsement by, or sponsorship from any rights holder. Use of a Reference Work's name on this site does not imply that the rights holder approves of, is associated with, or has reviewed the content.
If you are a rights holder and object to a specific reference, contact the operator and we will review and, if appropriate, remove or modify the reference.
6. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the operator, employees, and agents from any claim, demand, loss, or damage (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or related to: (a) your use of the site; (b) content you submit; (c) your violation of these terms; or (d) your violation of any third-party right, including copyright, trademark, privacy, or publicity rights.
7. No professional advice
The site is not therapy. It is not medical, psychological, psychiatric, legal, or financial advice. The metaphors, programs, and "overwrites" are entertainment-grade self-help tools, not clinical interventions. If you are in crisis, please contact a qualified professional or local emergency services immediately. In the United States: dial 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
8. Voting and lens submissions
Each registered user gets up to 3 votes per ISO calendar week on pending lens proposals. We may at our discretion close, extend, or reset voting cycles, and approve or reject lens submissions for any reason. Vote totals do not create any contractual obligation to add a lens to the site.
9. Account termination
You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Settings. Deleting your account permanently removes your username, email, tasks, diary entries, friend connections, and stat counters. Programs you authored will have their author field set to NULL ("Mental.OS") and will remain on the site under the license you granted in §4. Aggregate logs may be retained in anonymized form for site analytics.
10. Warranty disclaimer
The site is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We are not liable for any harm, direct or indirect, resulting from your use of the site or from any content posted by other users.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our aggregate liability to you for any claim arising out of these terms or your use of the site is limited to one hundred U.S. dollars ($100). We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the operator's jurisdiction without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute will be brought in courts located in that jurisdiction, and you consent to personal jurisdiction there.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
